Letting shoppers build their dream bed

Beddenleeuw makes boxsprings in its own factory in the Netherlands and sells them directly to customers. Each model is named after its headboard, and shoppers assemble the rest themselves: size, box type, legs, fabric, color, toppers, mattress, and accessories.

For years, the website displayed the results with photographs, one for each possible combination. As Beddenleeuw added options and expanded its range, that approach became unworkable. Every new fabric, leg, or headboard multiplied the number of images to produce and maintain.

Beddenleeuw needed a different foundation - a visual system in which the picture is generated from the choices rather than shot in advance.

The Challenge

Boxsprings are among the hardest products to visualize online, because the product is a stack of independent parts:

  • Every part changes the look. Headboard, box height, legs, upholstery, and toppers all show in the final bed.
  • The combinations multiply. Beddenleeuw offers 8 widths, 3 lengths, 10 box types, 7 leg styles, dozens of headboards, and 9 fabric collections.
  • Real construction rules apply. Beds 120 cm and wider are built from two boxes. Some headboards are wider than the bed, and some boxes and sizes can’t be combined. The visual had to follow these rules.
  • The old method didn’t scale. Photos for every combination meant constant production work, and they couldn’t keep pace with a changing range.
  • Images serve several channels. The website, product feeds, and marketing each need their own versions of the same bed.

The Solution

PIXREADY created a 3D product configuration that Beddenleeuw’s customers use directly on the product pages, in the same flow where they select their bed. For ease of use, the configuration was split into several configurators, each integrated into its own boxspring page.

Modeled from the real product. Beddenleeuw’s team measured parts in the factory and showroom, and we modeled from those measurements and photos. That meant capturing the details that make a bed look real:

  • Upholstery that changes to black fabric near the edge of the box.
  • Electric boxes with their upholstery cut-outs and gaps.
  • Tapered L-shaped legs and mounting plates.
  • Headboard button patterns that change by width.
  • Over-wide headboards, such as the Nola, which extends 40 cm beyond the bed on each side.

One 3D system for every combination:

  • 24 headboard designs, from plain panels to buttoned, quilted, and geometric styles.
  • 10 box types: hard, sprung, storage, electric, and electric deluxe, in different heights.
  • 7 leg styles, from low pads to tall Y and U-shaped legs.
  • 18 topper options and 4 mattresses.
  • 9 fabric collections and 55 colors, with textures prepared from the supplier’s material files.
  • Zoomable fabric swatches, so shoppers can see the weave before choosing.
  • Accessories that match the bed.

The result is an interactive bed that updates as the shopper chooses a size, switches the box type, swaps the legs, or tries another color. The configurator also offers AR and full-screen viewing.

Results & Business Impact

✓ 388,000+ variations available through one configurator system, built from about 800 size-specific 3D components instead of a library of photographs. Every combination of size, box, legs, fabric, color, and accessories is created on demand from the 3D models.

✓ A visual system that grows with the range. New fabrics, colors, legs, or headboards are added by updating the model library instead of reshooting every combination.

✓ Accurate previews of a made-to-order product. Shoppers see what the factory will build, including the right box construction, headboard proportions, and leg style.

✓ A modular setup. Splitting the configuration into separate configurators lets each boxspring model have its own configurator while sharing one component library.

✓ No dependence on physical sampling or photography. Every bed is a 3D model, so no photo shoots are needed for new combinations.

✓ Reusable for other formats. The same 3D models can be used to create images for product feeds, marketing, and future animations of moving parts, such as the electric boxes.
